POSITION SUMMARY
The Assistant Superintendent for Instructional Technology oversees the Instructional Technology, Media Services,
Instructional Development and Design departments, and the Atlanta Virtual Academy and related strategies. The
incumbent designs and implements instructional programs that appropriately incorporate media and design elements
required to provide rich and vibrant learning experiences for students and faculty. The role further develops the
strategy for implementing quality and innovative online program and course methodology for design and delivery and
acts as a key interface with the technology department to ensure that the technical environment and infrastructure
supports these innovative directions.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION:
Master’s degree in education, educational technology, instructional design, media studies, curriculum and
instruction, or a related field required
Terminal degree preferred
CERTIFICATION/LICENSE:
Must possess or be eligible to obtain Georgia Professional Standards Commission Certification at a level 5 or
higher in Educational Leadership or Instructional/Curriculum Leadership within 12 months of hire.
Valid driver’s license and availability of private transportation, or the ability to attend off-site meetings
WORK EXPERIENCE:
10 years of successful experience in one or more of the following: school leadership, education technology,
Curriculum design, inclusive of at least 5 years of progressively responsible administrative and supervisory
experience, preferably within public education
Successful experience in budgeting, planning, and implementing multiple programs/projects simultaneously
Record of publications, presentations, and demonstrable online links to applications related to curriculum
development, instructional technology, instructional design, and education, learning technology, or other related
fields
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
Experience influencing and leading change through influential leadership vs. direct command and control
Knowledge of trends in higher education online learning, particularly those related to online education that
impact curriculum and instruction development including, online library and electronic course material integration,
technology innovations, and policy issues
Understands the Board policies, local, state, and federal guidelines related to departmental functions,
communicates guidelines inherent in those policies, and oversees the implementation of policies.
Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation,
leadership technique, and coordination of people and resources
The ability to identify complex problems and review related information to develop and evaluate options and
implement solutions
Demonstrated ability to recruit, select, manage, and evaluate personnel.
Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups and effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing
Ability to successfully manage multiple tasks, projects, and responsibilities
Must be skilled in collaborative leadership of individuals and groups
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Provides leadership and strategic vision to learning technology, instructional technology, and media specialist
staff responsible for implementing appropriate instructional strategies for integrating technology into instruction.
Assesses students’ learning/instructional needs to identify the appropriate technology for instruction.
Assesses the professional learning needs for instructional staff, plus works collaboratively with school and
central office leaders to design, implement, and assess the effectiveness of professional learning opportunities that
support the continuous building of educators’ capacity.
Participates in making critical strategic decisions as a senior executive leadership team member.
Creates opportunities for job-embedded professional learning for teachers, leaders, and other school-based
instructional personnel to ensure alignment to instructional programs and district academic strategic goals.
Oversees the management of the Instructional Services Center to best meet the learning needs of APS
educators.
Uses technology to promote student-centered learning environments, including hands-on activities and digital
content in instruction, increase student engagement through collaboration and communication, and solve problems
and increase critical/creative thinking.
Applies and models legal and ethical use of technology.
Devises and implements a consistent multimedia-centered strategy for course development, including
emergent pedagogical possibilities with video, simulations, and interactivity.
Delivers content across various platforms and devices including new mobile platforms and associated
possibilities for the online classroom of the future.
Adopts and implements principles of instructional design, technologies, and effective online learning practices
across APS.
Collaborates with stakeholders to develop and implement an e-learning strategy for the design, execution,
implementation, and evaluation of all online and virtual educational activities, including webinars, instructor-led
courses, virtual conferences, and online courses.
Develops and implements strategies to restructure library management programs, emphasizing computing,
multimedia, and archival documentation.
Uses data to drive human capital management decisions and practices, demonstrates data-driven decision-
making, and uses data when collaborating with schools to determine professional learning priorities.
Develops and maintains strong relationships with key stakeholders, including teachers, leaders, post-
secondary institutions, and others
Evaluates and reflects upon professional practices, emerging technologies, and current research to support
student learning.
Inspires, challenges, aligns and develops the instructional technology team by providing high-quality
instructional leadership, best practices, coaching, and mentorship.
Oversees the development, implementation, and monitoring of the district’s short-term and long-range
instructional goals to improve the use of instructional technology in classrooms.
Provides leadership and oversight in the development and maintenance of the annual budgets
Required to have prompt, regular attendance in-person or virtually and be available to work on-site, in-person
during regular business hours, and as needed.
Performs other duties as assigned by an appropriate administrator or their representative.

stress.
