A lawful permanent resident card (Green Card) usually expires after 10 years. You may renew your Green
Card while in Japan and if you are unable to do so, you may be eligible for reentry into the U.S. even with
an expired Green Card. See below for more details
HOW CAN I RENEW MY GREEN CARD WHILE OVERSEAS?
If you have a 10-year Green Card and you sponsor is an active duty servicemember or a DoD state-hire
civilian employee with command sponsorship, you may renew your Green Card while you are overseas.
You will need to file the form I-90 https://www.uscis.gov/i-90.
WHAT DOCUMENTS ARE NEEDED?
Follow the instructions given as you are filing. Generally, you will need the following documents:
Form G-1145 E-notification of Application/Petition Acceptance https://www.uscis.gov/g-1145
Place on top of your application package.
Form I-90 http://www.uscis.gov/i-90 On top of the application form, write "Active Military
Orders" or "Government Orders". Use FPO or APO address for your mailing address.
A copy of your spouse's military orders
A photocopy of both sides of your Lawful Permanent Resident Card (green card)
Two properly completed FD-258 fingerprint cards taken by security.
Photos two identical color passport-style photos (2” x 2” or 5cm x 5 cm)
Fees A total of $540 as of 1 April 2021 ($455 application fee and $85 biometric fee). Check
www.uscis.gov/i-90 for the current fees. You may pay with money order, personal check, cashier’s
check, or credit card using Form G-1450. Make your check payable to the U.S. Department of
Homeland Security. Fee Waiver Request: Check https://www.uscis.gov/feewaiver for eligibility
and other information about a fee waiver. Please note that requesting a fee waiver may affect
your current immigration status.
Any evidence required by I-90 instruction applicable to your case.

CAN I TRAVEL TO THE US WITH AN EXPIRED GREEN CARD?
Dependents of Service Members or stateside-hired DoD civilians do not lose their Lawful Permanent
Residence status while they are in Japan on orders plus four months after their sponsor PCS out of Japan.
