June 2016
Madrid-Waddington Central School
Have a great
Summer!
Congratulations to MWCS Class of 2016
Graduation—Friday, June 24, 2016 at 7:00 PM
John Dinneen Memorial Auditorium
Dear Madrid-Waddington Community,
In September 1982, I entered Madrid-Waddington Central School for the very first time as a Student Teacher
in the Grades 7-12 Spanish Classes. Little did I know during that 12 week placement, that 32 years later, I
would be retiring from this very District as its Superintendent. I am extremely honored and appreciative of
having had the opportunity to serve this District in both capacities!
I wish to express my sincere gratitude for the support of the community, staff and students as we wove our
way through some tumultuous budget years, curriculum and assessment challenges and extensive capital pro-
jects that have maintained our buildings and grounds, as well as made us a premier leader in the effective utili-
zation of technology among North Country schools.
I also wish to congratulate and thank Mr. Michael (Mickey) Miller for his outstanding leadership as President of
the MWCS Board of Education for the past 9 years. He started his term as a Board member in 2002 and al-
ways put student interests and needs first in the decision making process.
MWCS will also greatly miss Mrs. Kathryn Higgins, Director of Guidance, who has served MWCS students
since 1993; and Mrs. Linda Ford, Gr. K-12 Teaching Assistant, who has supported students and teachers for 10
years. I would like to wish a long healthy retirement to both Mr. Robert (Bernie) Stebbins, Custodial Driver,
and Mrs. Nancy Stebbins, Cafeteria Worker/Bus Driver, as they leave the District after dedicating a combined
32 years to the District.
Mrs. Melinda (Mindy) Fisher is well deserving of special recognition at this time of her retirement. Mrs. Fisher
served as a Board member for 14 years before becoming the Secretary, not only to the Superintendent, but to
the District in August 2006. Her outstanding interpersonal and professional skills kept me, the Board of Educa-
tion and District Office functions on time, on task and out of trouble. Mindy’s respect, tact and warmth be-
stowed a true MWCS welcome to all who visited the District Office.
Lastly, I salute the Graduating Class of 2016. In contrast to those of us who are at the end of our careers, you
are now at the beginning! You will be confronted with many controversies and conflicts as you progress
through your adult life. Please keep in mind, that due to your community supported MWCS education, you
have the intellectual capacity, skills and tools to respond effectively.
Wishing all of you continued learning in college, career, citizenship and life,
Sincerely,
Lynn M. Roy

Last Day for Elementary Students
We will continue to send home important information with your children. Please be sure to check book bags
each day. If you have any questions, please dont hesitate to call our office at 322-5746, ext 201.
As many of you are aware, the District will begin a renovation project immediately after the conclusion of
the school year. Many of these necessary updates will serve to improve the functionality of the Elementary
building. New changes will include, but not be limited to the following:
Reconfiguration of the office reception area to include a waiting room for parents and increased
security.
The removal of hallway carpeting to be replaced with high grade rubberized flooring.
New (larger) lockers K-5
We anticipate the building will be torn up for the majority of the summer months. Administrative and secre-
tarial staff will still be accessible to answer all questions. Please call 322-5746 and your call will be directed
to the appropriate individual.
As always, it has been an honor and a pleasure working with the families of the Madrid-Waddington com-
munity. I firmly believe our students are the best in the business, and we could not succeed in providing
the best learning opportunities without your support.
Please remember, my door is always open. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me by

Information for College-Bound Juniors
Juniors completed a resume and a career inventory earlier in the year to prepare them to
attend “Gateways to Careers” at SUNY CANTON in April. We encourage Juniors who are in-
terested in college to spend time this summer thinking about colleges they feel might be a
good fit. Visiting colleges you have a strong interest in is also a valuable experience to deter-
mine whether you feel those colleges will meet your needs. College websites are wonderful
resources for finding out about campus tours, open houses, admission requirements, finan-
cial aid and other pertinent data.
In the Fall of 2016, students who plan to attend college should take at least one of the col-
lege entrance exams (the SAT and/or the ACT). This is especially important for students who
intend to go to a four-year college directly out of high school, and who did not take one of
these exams Spring of 2016.

The United States Department of Education has just released two new E-Tools to help those in the
higher education selection process obtain up-to-date news and reference guidelines that are a valua-
ble to their information gathering.
The first E-Tool is a new financial aid estimator called FAFSA4caster designed to help students
and their families plan for college. It provides students with an early estimate of their eligibility for
federal student financial assistance. The tool will also help to reduce the time it will take to com-
plete the Free Application for Federal Student aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA4caster can be reached at
www.FederalStudentAid.ed.gov
The second tool is provided by the Institute of Educational Sciences, National Center for Educa-
tion Statistics and allows visitors to this site to conduct a quick search and locate information on
colleges, universities, and other postsecondary institutions. Users can see and compare profiles of
nearly 7,000 facilities across the nation. The site can be accessed by visiting the US Department of
Education’s website Ed.gov with an advance search on COOL: College Opportunities Online
