Shaw, S., & Bailey, C. (2011). Success in the US: Are Cambridge International Assessments
Good Preparation for University Study? Journal of College Admission, (Fall 2011), 616.
Brief Description:
This study compares the effects of AICE
participation to AP, IB, and matched students
who did not earn credit through an advanced
program on freshman year GPA.
Sample Size and Characteristics:
The sample included more than 8,500
students who entered FSU during the
academic years of 2007-2010.
Key Finding:
Cambridge AICE students earned higher
freshman year GPA compared to AP and
IB students, and all three groups earned
higher freshman year GPA compared to
matched students who did not earn credit
through an advanced program.
Cambridge AICE comparisons to other Advanced Programs
Cambridge Global Perspectives and Research (GPR)
constitutes compulsory core of AICE diploma
New A Level in GPR launched this fall (previously AS
only); IGCSE; pilot secondary 1 course
Taught as two successive courses - Global Perspectives
(a taught course) and a Research Report
Excellent preparation for undergraduate study - gives
real evidence of independent, critical thinking

“We particularly value the independence of thought, critical thinking and research and inquiry
skills that GPR develops, and believe that it is a promising addition to the courses of study that
prepare students well for post-secondary education” – Stuart Schumill, MIT Dean of
Admission

Higher Education Feedback on Cambridge
“Students we have who have taken Cambridge International A Levels do very well at our
campus. They are very well-prepared for our curriculum and we find that they have a lot of
confidence, but also that they have a good deep subject knowledge, (and) the ability to think
critically and well.” Stuart Schmill, Dean of Admissions, Massachusetts Institute of
Technology (MIT)
“We think the Cambridge curriculum is superb preparation for university.” Christoph Guttentag,
Dean of Undergraduate Admissions, Duke University
“We believe that Cambridge International AS and A Level examinations are excellent preparation
for students to take the next step in the path of lifelong learning.” Mary Adams, Associate
Director of Admissions, Pennsylvania State University
